James, 2nd Duke of Atholl

The gilt lead bust cast by John Cheere was apparently a most unusual form for the sculptor.

The 2nd Duke was clearly a valued customer as Cheere sculpted many of the figures for the castle gardens.

Most notable is that of Hercules who presides over the walled garden bearing his name. This particular bust sits on a bardiglio marble plinth and was gilded by Cartchean in 1758 for the princely sum of 1 ½ guineas, or 57p.
