Jar (Olla), Human Figures and Spirals

Unknown Artist

To create red-on-buff ware, Hohokam potters from present-day south-central Arizona applied iron-based pigment on vessels constructed from tan-colored paste that naturally had brilliant flecks of mica. The lively motifs depicted on the large jars, bowl, and rare rectangular box include geometric scrolls, bands, and a number of stylized life forms, such as birds, reptiles, and human figures.
