Phaedra and Hippolytus

Signed and dated

Phaedra, the daughter of Minos, a king of Crete, married Theseus, a king of Athens. The goddess Venus maliciously imbued Phaedra with an unconquerable passion for her step-son, Hippolytus. Under this spell, Phaedra attempted to seduce Hippolytus, and on failing to do so, accused him before Theseus of attempts on her virtue.

Hippolytus fled from Athens and was killed when his chariot overturned. On hearing of this tragedy Phaedra confessed the truth and hanged herself out of shame.
