The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

This work combines satirical caricature and poetry to explore political urgencies of the 1980s. The biblical narrative of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse connects the rise of right-wing politicians – namely Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan – with oppression and the possibility of nuclear Armageddon.

The first piece examines the vitriolic rhetoric that preceded the Conservative Party’s 1983 re-election. The second shows a police officer involved in the violent suppression of picketers during the UK miners’ strike. The third decries the storage of nuclear weapons at Greenham Common RAF Base in Berkshire, England. The fourth depicts Reagan, paralleling his earlier acting career with his potential to instigate conflict.
