Madurai Viran is a Tamil folk deity. He worked for Thirumala Nayaka of the 17th century. His story is narrated in the 16 vignettes surrounding the main tableau. Once Viran cut his throat at the feet of the Goddess Minakshi to repent his wrong deeds, she blessed him and made him the guardian of her temple.
