Margareta Eriksdotter Vasa (dead 1537), married to 1. council of State Joakim Brahe, 2. Count Johan of Hoia

Mäster Hillebrandt

The woman can’t be identified with certainty. Both Gustav Vasa’s sister, Margareta, and his first wife, Katarina of Saxony-Lauenburg, have been suggested. The coat of arms indicates the Vasa dynasty. Like the inscription, they are likely to have been added later. The painting is reminiscent of contemporary German paintings, for example Lucas Cranach the elder and his circle.
