Mirror (2003.38)

Unknown Artist

Pillar frame mirror. This mirror is typical of those pillar mirrors popular from about 1820 until mid-nineteenth century. Four sections of the frame are mitred together. The split turnings are applied on all four sides of the frame and composition ornaments are applied to the block corners. The mirror is embellished with gold paint and an eglomise glass panel. The reverse painting on the glass features the figure of a woman plucking flowers from a container of blossoms. This image is placed in a stage-like setting with voluminous curtains drawn back to reveal the charming scene. The remainder of the surrounding glass is painted white and accented with green and gold designs. The wooden backboard of the mirror is nailed to the frame, and has split completely on one side with smaller splits elsewhere.
