Mother and Child

Adopted by Liz & Brian Watson, in memory of Bryony

This sculpture is the earliest example of Mary modelling in terracotta. It shows the influence of French sculptor Aimés-Jules Dalou, who was particularly known for his Mother and Child series of terracotta sculptures.

By 1885, Mary’s passion for clay and her desire to encourage artistic pursuits in others saw her deliver clay modelling classes for the Home Arts & Industries Association in the deprived area of Whitechapel, London. The Association, which began in 1877, was started with a view to revive forgotten handicrafts across the country and improving the wellbeing of working people through art and craft.

Adopted by Liz and Brian Watson in memory of their daughter, Bryony Watson.
