North Italian Lake

Jane Barr was Linley’s aunt, a skilled amateur artist, it was probably her who encouraged Linley’s artistic talents. He lived with his aunt for several years after his father’s death in 1866, and upon her death in 1874 she left Linley an annuity of £650 – a testament to their close relationship. The annuity provided a valuable supplement to his income from Punch, and it was largely this financial security that enabled Linley to propose to Marion in May 1874.
