Papal Bull from Pope Benedict XIII
The Papal Bull from Pope Benedict XIII granted university status to the institution in St Andrews in 1413. Until the religious upheaval of the Reformation in the 1500s, the University was ruled by the authority of the Catholic Church. The Pope granted funds and privileges in documents with his official seal or ‘bulla’ attached, known as Bulls.
