A Mid-Georgian Pole Screen

Unknown Artist

A mid-Georgian mahogany pole screen, the rectangular panel is embroidered with a parrot and floral sprays on brown linen, with ball finial to the knopped baluster shaft and tripod base on pad feet.

Pole screens were used in the mid-18th century to shield ladies from the heat of the fire. At this time, make-up included wax and so the heat would have caused it to melt.
