Portrait of a lady

This Portrait of a Lady is one of the very few etchings made in Mondriaan’s Amsterdam period. In the academic year 1896- 1897 he had returned to the National Academy of Visual Arts to master the art of etching.

Unfortunately it is not known who the young lady in the fashionable hat might have been. This is probably just a test case, seeing the dirty finger prints and smudges on the edges. Mondriaan may have wanted to learn etching as another source of income: he would be able to deliver ex-libris and printed pictures to a wider audience. Despite this, in the end he made hardly any etchings....
