Prize medal

Royal Geographical Society Medal, of the type presented to Captain Scott and members of the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901. Obverse: A bust of Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) in a naval cap facing 3/4 left. There is an inscribed band across the field behind his head and sprays of laurel in the foreground. Inscription on band: 'JANUARY 2.1902 MARCH 5.1904'. Legend: 'TO. CAPTAIN. ROBERT. SCOTT. RN. CVO. FRGS. COMMANDER. OF. THE. EXPEDITION'. Signed: 'GILBERT BAYES'.

Reverse: The explorer in Antarctic dress standing in front of a sledge being packed by a kneeling figure (right); SS 'Discovery' in the ice and a sledge party in the distance. Legend: 'PRESENTED. BY. THE. ROYAL. GEOGRAPHICAL. SOCIETY. FOR. ANTARCTIC. DISCOVERY.' In the exergue, a group of penguins and seals. Inscription on the edge: 'ARTHUR E QUARTLY, R.N.'
