Roman shoe

Unknown Maker

This leather ‘carbatina’ shoe dates from the 1st century AD, making it around two thousand years old. It is made from a single piece of leather and was probably worn by a woman.

The Bank of England’s Threadneedle Street building stands on the site of the river Walbrook. Now subverted underground, this river once ran through the Roman city of Londinium. Many Roman artefacts were found when the Bank was rebuilt in the 1930s.
