For his glass sculptures, Powell used the murrini technique. Murrini are small bits of glass, almost like beads which vary in size.

Powell would lay his murrini in carefully composed rows on a steel plate, thousands would be used for a single piece. He would then gather clear molten glass on his pipe, blow a small bubble within it, and roll the hot glass over the murrini; they are instantly fused to the hot glass and begin to melt.
