Cabinet (VII)

Sarah Jones’ photographic practice has examined the consulting space used for psychoanalysis. In particular ‘the couch’ as subject, and how a photograph of such might be engaged with in the gallery. This concern frames her interest in how a photographic portrait might affect the viewer. Her recent work establishes a viewing experience predicated on how the camera, in particular, measures and transcribes. Often characterised by studio lighting, lit singular subjects appear to emerge from a photographic inky black ‘space’. Along with ongoing works on the analyst’s room she has established themes including municipal rose garden displays in relationship to the genre of still life; the singular female; hair as a motif; the ‘life room’; the life model; the classical subject of ‘the horse’ and black-and-white ‘cabinet’ works.
