Self-Portrait ('Venetian Senator')

Inspired by the Italian Old Masters, early in his career Watts sought to paint vast murals on the walls of important buildings. This commanding self-portrait was painted when Watts, aged about 36, was working on these grand projects.

For many years, this portrait hung near the entrance to the Picture Gallery of Watts’s London home in Kensington, as an imposing welcome to his visitors.
