Side chair (74.16.1)

Unknown Artist

One of a pair of Rococo side chairs. Made of mahogany, yellow pine, poplar, and sweet gum. Each chair has a vertically pierced, vase-shaped splat which extends to the seat. The back chair rail is straight, but slightly concave. The front legs are straight and undecorated. On each, the back legs and stiles are made of one curved piece of wood, and are beveled at each corner. The splats have been pieced at the upper corners through tenons. The splat is housed into top of the shoe. This shoe is actually attached to the back seat rail so that there are three sections: the splat, the horizontal shoe, and the back stretchers. There is no horizontal shaping on the seat rails. The back legs are chamfered. However, the top edge of the seat rails and the outer edge of the front legs have a ridge decoration. The back seat rail is composed of sweet gum with extensive insect boring. The front corner blocks are pieced to form a quarter round, a rectangular section at the front rail. The slip seat is upholstered in a light blue silk damask.
