Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat

Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat (1667?-1747), Jacobite.

This crudely painted copy after Hogarth shows the Jacobite, Lord Lovat, in about his 80th year, shortly before his beheading for high treason in 1747. It presumably derives from Hogarth's etching of Lord Lovat, published in 1746 since, like the etching, it shows the buttons on the wrong side and the gesture as left-handed. More detailed information on this portrait is available in a National Portrait Gallery collection catalogue, John Kerslake's Early Georgian Portraits (1977, out of print).
