Sir Joseph Noel Paton, 1821 - 1901. Artist

Amelia Hill's imposing bust of her brother portrays him as the successful painter of historical narrative pictures and fairy tale pictures such as 'Luther at Erfurt' and 'The Quarrel of Oberon and Titania' in the National Gallery of Scotland. As a prominent member of the Society of Antiquaries, Paton helped to conceive the scheme for the external sculptural decoration of the Portrait Gallery. The sculptor's own professional career began late following her marriage to the landscape painter and pioneer photographer D O Hill. During the 1870s she became the first Scottish woman sculptor to receive a major public commission for the Livingstone monument in Princes Street Gardens.
