St. Jacobs Church

This small sketch was drawn by Mondriaan in 1897 or 1898 in the family home in Winterswijk. Behind his easel in the conservatory he drew the view of the bell tower of the Dutch Reformed Church. The apple tree in the garden, depicted in charcoal and chalk, was also drawn from here. In a later, totally abstract, version this tree would be reduced to simple lines and squares. And in this form, the tree would become world famous.

The apple tree you see today is a gift to Villa Mondriaan from the Kunstmuseum in The Hague. Many early sketches and paintings on show in the Villa are on loan from this municipal museum, which is proud to exhibit Mondriaan’s later work, including the famous Victory Boogie Woogie.
