Study of Hills

In this landscape sketch of rugged hills, Leighton has subtly translated a strong sense of the physicality and solidity of the exposed rock surfaces. The golden glow of the hills suggests they were painted towards the end of the day. The resulting elongated shadows, cast by the various peaks and ridges, emphasize their outlines and sharply define their forms.
