Thomas Jefferson

Sculptor Donald DeLue created this likeness of Thomas Jefferson in 1975 on the eve of the celebrations of America’s bicentennial in 1976. It came to the WSU campus in 1986, where it became one of two pieces by DeLue in the Outdoor Sculpture Collection. The other is the bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. located in front of Lindquist Hall.

For DeLue, the sculpture was a tribute to Jefferson in recognition of the “tremendous part he played in stating the purposes and rationale for the American Revolution.” The paper and quill that Jefferson is holding are allusions to his role as a writer, notably of the Declaration of Independence.
