Vase with Handles

In the early phase of enameling, glassmakers left the undersides of their vessels unadorned or sparsely decorated, because of the difficulty of heating the end facing away from the furnace sufficiently for the enamel to adhere. The gilding on this piece, now abraded, was originally much richer.
