Woman with a Picnic Basket
A young woman sits on a park bench with a picnic basket at her feet, shielding her eyes from the sun with a somewhat flirtatious gesture. Picnic scenes became increasingly popular in late nineteenth-century Paris, as parks became part of modern urban life. Though the picture captures the freshness of the outdoors, it was probably painted in Madrazo's studio.
