The State Hermitage Museum
The collection of the State Hermitage includes over 3 million works of art and world culture artefacts. In addition to the largest collection of painting in the world the museum holds graphic works, sculptures, works of applied art, archaeological artefacts and numismatic objects. The museum was founded in 1764 by Empress Catherine the Great with its initial collection of paintings acquired from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. Occupying historic buildings along the Palace Embankment in St. Petersburg the museum also has several exhibition centres abroad.
