Exploring Oxford’s historic library architecture

Bodleian Libraries has introduced a new Smartify digital guide, offering visitors a flexible way to explore the history and architecture of one of Europe’s oldest libraries.

Founded in 1602 on the site of Duke Humfrey’s Library, first opened in 1488, the Bodleian Library sits at the heart of Oxford’s academic and architectural heritage. Today, the wider Bodleian Libraries include 21 other libraries across the city, forming an extraordinary network of learning, research and public history.

A flexible option for busy periods

The new Bodleian Library Outdoor Audio Trail has been designed to support visitors when demand for guided tours is high. During busy periods, the digital guide can be offered as an alternative once in-person tours have sold out, while also giving independent visitors the option to explore at their own pace.

Delivered through Smartify, the guide works directly on visitors’ own devices, with no need for additional hardware or downloads.

Stories brought to life through audio

At the heart of the experience is a bespoke audio tour, introducing visitors to the Bodleian Library, taking you inside the Divinity School and exploring the surrounding exterior historic site. The trail brings together architectural context, institutional history and visitor-friendly storytelling, helping audiences connect with the spaces around them. Available in multiple languages, the guide also supports international visitors, making the experience more accessible and inclusive.

Clear guidance, seamless visits

Alongside the tour content, Smartify supports clear visitor information, a map and in-app reminders, helping visitors navigate the experience with confidence and easy to follow wayfinding.

The launch reflects a growing shift across cultural and heritage destinations: using digital guides to increase access, manage visitor demand and enhance interpretation without compromising the character of historic spaces.
